Doctrinal Statement

We at Thomas Ministries subscribe to the National Association of Evangelicals Statement of Faith:

"The Bible alone, and the Bible in its entirety, is the Word of God written and is therefore inerrant in the autographs. God is a Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, each an uncreated person, one in essence, equal in power and glory."

We must clarify, however, that the statement "inerrant in the autographs" means that only the original manuscripts by the original writers were inerrant. What we work with today is correctly recognized by this statement of faith as copies of the originally inerrant writings. These copies, though of incredibly high fidelity, do themselves contain copyist errors and minimal other differences between them. These differences do not in any way subvert or refute the essentials of the Christian faith. But, they do serve notice that we are to be careful about what we call "inerrant."

We therefore utterly reject the idea that any particular translation of the original Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic writings, such as the King James Version, the NIV, or the Latin Vulgate, is in itself inerrant. When representing sound translation, they do accurately report the original meanings presented in the original languages (i.e. they do accurately present the original truths and ideas given to us by God). But they themselves are not inerrant. Anyone who claims otherwise is displaying a complete lack of understanding of the process of Bible translation; a lack of understanding which must be corrected for genuine Christian maturity to be obtained. This same lack of understanding further causes many totally baseless and completely preventable misconceptions and divisions within the institutional church; divisions which violate Jesus' command for His Church to be known in the world for the love between its members (John 13:35).

We must note, however, that the idea that the translation process runs through many different languages (e.g. Hebrew to Latin to Italian to German to English) is a false one. Each modern language translation starts with manuscript copies of the original writings that are in the original languages of Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. Whether a given Bible translation is in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian or any other modern language, it arrived at that language by being directly translated from Classical Hebrew, Aramaic, and Koine Greek. So, do not let the false idea that the Bible is not reliable "because it has been through so many translations" get in the way of taking the Bible seriously!
